Commuters could face significant delays from 5pm as about 1000 people are expected to march across Sydney’s CBD for the “Stop Sydney to Stop Adani” protest.
Mr Adam Hastie, coordinator at Extinction Rebellion NSW, said the protest will stop traffic but it is necessary to put pressure on the NSW government to take action on climate change.
“Alot of people talk about how they will be inconvenienced by the march and I understand that they are just trying to live their lives. But we will only stop protesting as soon as the government takes action,” said Mr Hastie.
“Any temporary inconvenience is nothing compared to the inconvenience we will experience if we fail.”
The legal march comes after a similar protest in Brisbane last month and Mr Hastie said people will keep on marching until projects like Adani are stopped.
“The only way for us to get represented is through protests. We have to get our demands met,” he said.
“We are talking about a future where we have a lack of access to water and more than 2 billion refugees worldwide. It’s a terrifying possibility.”
